Breast Cancer

Imagine it being your first day as a senior in high school. You wake up that morning extra early anxious and excited to get back to see your friends you’ve been away from the entire summer break. It’s your last year of high school and your life couldn’t be more perfect. The end of the school day arrives and you’re all excited to run home to tell your folks about what a wonderful day you had. You make it home, but today you aren’t greeted by the scent of your mom cooking dinner or the sound of your dad watching sports on tv. On this day you are greeted with the stench of silence and your parents have this very dull solemn look on their faces. They sit you down at the table to tell you some news. Your mom has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I know right, world crushing news. How could I know? I know because a very similar scenario happened to me. My mom was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. She had to quit her job to receive her treatment. Now, she needed to know how coul

Violent Media Is Good For Kids

According to Gerard Jones, violent media can actually have positive effects on young people because, “the dual-identity concept at the heart of many superhero stories helps kids negotiate the conflicts between the inner self and the public self as they work through the early stages of socialization.” (Jones 66)   Jones also believes that violent media is a positive influence on children because it helps them to build self-confidence and tackle life obstacles. For instance when his son was afraid to climb a tree at school, Jones read his son Tarzan comics, his son conquered his fear and climbed the tree. Some people believe that children shouldn’t watch violent media because it could lead to them acting out. Is it the media that causes people to act out or is natural rage itself that causes humans to commit violent crimes? Wayyy before violent media was ever created people committed violent crimes. Yes, in history we have seen violent crimes take place after kids were exposed to vio

College Is A Waste Of Time

Image
In the essay "College is a waste of time" Stephens appeals to the audience by stating that college is broken. We go to college to get a higher education so that we can receive a higher paying job. What they don't tell us is that after graduation employers only want people with experience. So, your paper diploma means nothing in the real world. Now, most college graduates are left stranded with countless amounts of debt, no job, and no experience. There is an alternative to college which is usually more productive like building your own businesses. Working on projects of your own to help build skills needed for real life situations. For example, Mark Zuckerberg didn't finish college but he's a millionaire. We can learn so much more outside of the classroom than we can inside. We also  have a higher chance to receive a great job with experience or talent. All you have to do is focus on your priorities.

About Me

Image
Hello, ladies and gents welcome to my very first blog post. For starters let me introduce myself. My name is Meriah Willis I am attending my first year of college here at GGC. Originally, I had decided to take a break from school and during this time I almost joined the United States Air force. Funny how life works and turns us around. Now, three years later I'm majoring in biology and hoping to figure out what career path I want to go down before freshman year is over. I was born and raised in Mississippi. Yep, a true country gal. I love listening to music, cooking, eating, fishing, hunting, and mud riding. Also, I have a deep passion for golden crispy French fries but that's a whole other story. I'm pretty extroverted so if you ever see me in person don't be afraid to say hi. Heck, we may even go out for French fries together.
