Violent Media Is Good For Kids
According to Gerard Jones,
violent media can actually have positive effects on young people because, “the
dual-identity concept at the heart of many superhero stories helps kids
negotiate the conflicts between the inner self and the public self as they work
through the early stages of socialization.” (Jones 66) Jones also believes that violent media is a
positive influence on children because it helps them to build self-confidence and
tackle life obstacles. For instance when his son was afraid to climb a tree at
school, Jones read his son Tarzan comics, his son conquered his fear and climbed
the tree. Some people believe that children shouldn’t watch violent media because
it could lead to them acting out. Is it the media that causes people to act out
or is natural rage itself that causes humans to commit violent crimes? Wayyy
before violent media was ever created people committed violent crimes. Yes, in
history we have seen violent crimes take place after kids were exposed to
violent media. Look at the Columbine massacre. Two teenagers committed one of
the most violent crimes in America after playing a violent video game. However,
even though violent media has been the forefront of people committing violent crimes
it has also helped a lot of people get through tough life situations.
